OLH Welcomes Università della Svizzera italiana

Posted by Dr Paula Clemente Vega on 24 June 2025

The Open Library of Humanities is pleased to welcome a new supporting institution: the Università della Svizzera italiana. Established in 1996, Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) is one of the 12 certified public universities in Switzerland and a member of swissuniversities. With four campuses located across the Italian speaking southern part of Switzerland, it is organised in six Faculties and is active in several study and research areas, among which: architecture, communication sciences, computational science, data science, economics, health studies, humanities, informatics, law, medicine and biomedicine.

With this partnership in place, USI, through its University Libraries, demonstrates its support of diamond open access. The Open Library of Humanities is collectively funded by its member libraries and wouldn't be able to operate without their generous support. Redirecting funds for the support of scholar-led diamond OA initiatives is vital for the survival of not-for-profit platforms such as OLH. It helps build an academic publishing ecosystem based on equity and on a vision of academic research as a global public good.

About OLH: The Open Library of Humanities is an award-winning, academic-led publisher of 33 diamond open access journals based at Birkbeck, University of London. With initial funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and subsequent support from Arcadia, a charitable fund, the platform covers its costs by payments from an international library consortium rather than any author fee. This funding mechanism enables equitable open access in the humanities disciplines, with charges neither to readers nor authors.
