Following yesterday’s announcement that MIT’s linguistics faculty have pledged support for Glossa and the Open Library of Humanities, a number of faculty members in the University of California system have made a similar declaration. The full list of signatures is available online.

In an announcement, Ivy Anderson, California Digital Library’s Director for Collections and Interim Executive Director, draws attention though to some of the challenges faced by libraries in the transition to open access. She notes that: ‘in today’s environment of bundled subscription deals, cancelling a journal isn’t always a simple matter. “Many journal licenses do, however, permit the library to substitute new journal subscriptions for ones that are no longer of interest, and this is the route that the UC Libraries will be pursuing”’.

Glossa is published by Ubiquity Press, with long-term financial support from the Open Library of Humanities to ensure that there are no author-facing charges. Libraries that wish to support this model are encouraged to join the OLH’s LPS model. Libraries outside the US and UK interested in joining the OLH Library Partnership Subsidy model should contact Dr. Martin Paul Eve: martin.eve@openlibhums.org. UK-based libraries can join through Jisc Collections at http://www.jisc-collections.ac.uk/Catalogue/Overview/Index/2120. US-based libraries can join through LYRASIS at https://lyrasis.openlibhums.org.
