Ten Years of Glossa: A Decade of Diamond Open Access in Linguistics
Posted by Dr Paula Clemente Vega on 26 March 2026
Today we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Glossa, one of our diamond open access linguistics journals. The history of Glossa is closely intertwined with that of the Open Library of Humanities. It was one of our first journal flips in 2015, when OLH launched with just seven journals and 100 supporting institutions. Today, OLH publishes 35 diamond open access journals—with more joining each year—and is supported by over 340 institutions worldwide.
Ten years ago, Glossa joined the Open Library of Humanities following the collective resignation of the entire editorial board of Lingua, then published by Elsevier. The editors stepped down in protest against the journal’s commercialisation, after Elsevier refused to adopt a fully open access model without high fees and maintained its claim of ownership over the journal.
Over the past decade, Glossa has published more than 1,100 diamond open access articles, establishing itself as a leading venue for innovative research in linguistics and providing high-quality scholarship through its diamond open access model. This success has been made possible by the dedication and enthusiasm of its editors, reviewers, authors, and the wider linguistics community. It has also been made possible by the hundreds of OLH supporting institutions that collectively fund the platform, ensuring it remains free for both authors and readers.
Prof. Johan Rooryck, co-Editor-in-Chief of Glossa commented: “The editors of Glossa are delighted to be able to celebrate their 10th anniversary with the Open Library of Humanities. Together, we have now published over 1150 papers since 2016. We realize that Glossa is one of the larger and more demanding journals of the OLH journal collection, and we have nothing but praise for the collaboration with the services of the OLH, including its advanced submission system and portal Janeway, and the copy-editing and typesetting services of SiliconChips. Diamond OA publishing really is about the community of authors, readers, reviewers, (guest) editors, and technical and editorial staff: they make it happen. Here’s to 10 more years!”
OLH Editorial Director Dr Rose Harris-Birtill said: “We’re absolutely delighted to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Glossa here at OLH. A huge thank you to its incredibly dedicated editorial team for all their hard work for the journal over the past decade, as well as to all its authors and readers for their continued support of Glossa. This journal was a real pioneer in moving to publish with us a decade ago, and continues to inspire others to flip their journals to diamond open access for the benefit of all. Here’s to Glossa’s next ten years of diamond open access!”
To all who have contributed to this journey, thank you for your support and dedication. This achievement reflects your shared commitment to open access and academic excellence.
Here’s to the next 10 years of Glossa, and many more to come!
