Janeway launches new website and brand identity

We are thrilled to announce the launch of Janeway’s newly redesigned website and brand identity, which you can explore here. Over the past two years, we’ve been rethinking how Janeway, our open-source publishing platform, presents itself online. We recognised that our digital presence needed to evolve to better reflect who we are today. We began by conducting user experience research, gathering feedback from our community, and using these insights to guide the design and development of the new site.
At the same time, this period has marked significant growth and transformation for Janeway: from new partnerships, team members, journal migrations, and collaborations to ongoing technical innovation and expanded services. This includes improvements in accessibility, user experience, and interoperability through audit enhancements, interface redesigns, and new integrations. The launch of our new website reflects this progress.
With this redesign, we aimed to better convey Janeway’s identity as an open-source, community-driven publishing platform, one that combines academic expertise with accessibility, innovation, and a distinctive retro sci-fi aesthetic. The new branding introduces a more cohesive visual identity across the website and platform, including a new logo, an updated colour palette with stronger contrast and warmth, and a refined typography that balances personality with readability. We’ve also introduced distinctive brand shapes inspired by retro sci-fi design, helping guide attention, highlight key information, and bring visual energy to the interface.
Together, these changes strengthen Janeway’s presence, making it more distinctive, approachable, and aligned with its mission to support open, sustainable, and community-driven scholarly publishing.
Special thanks to our designer, Carly Murphy-Merrydew, who created our new visual identity and branding assets, and to Joe Muller, Senior Publishing Technologies Developer at the OLH, who built the new site.
