The University of Essex joins the Open Library of Humanities

The Open Library of Humanities is pleased to welcome a new supporting institution, the University of Essex.

The University of Essex is committed to making change happen through research and education, and boasts a diverse global community of staff and students from more than 140 countries, an expanding network of transnational education partnerships, and over 130,000 alumni making a powerful global impact that keeps growing.

The University of Essex holds the fundamental belief that knowledge should be created together, not just handed down. By actively participating in research, students become bold enough to tackle inequality and change the status quo, discovering how they want to grow and what they want to change.

The University of Essex has a commitment to open access. By partnering with the Open Library of Humanities, which is collectively funded by its member libraries, the University of Essex is showing their support for scholar-led diamond open access initiatives. This support is vital for the survival of not-for-profit platforms such as OLH, contributing toward building an academic publishing ecosystem based on equity and a vision of academic research as a global public good.

About OLH: The Open Library of Humanities is an award-winning, academic-led publisher of 35 diamond open access journals based at Birkbeck, University of London. With initial funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and subsequent support from Arcadia, a charitable fund, the platform covers its costs by payments from an international library consortium rather than any author fee. This funding mechanism enables equitable open access in the humanities disciplines, with charges neither to readers nor authors.
