University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill joins OLH LPS model

We are extremely pleased to announce that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has joined the Open Library of Humanities' Library Partnership Subsidy system. UNC-Chapel Hill, America’s first public university, is a global higher education leader known for innovative teaching, research and public service. A member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, Carolina regularly ranks as the best value for academic quality in U.S. public higher education.

The Open Library of Humanities is an academic-led, gold open-access publisher with no author-facing charges. With initial funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the platform covers its costs by payments from an international library consortium, rather than any kind of author fee.

Dr. Martin Paul Eve, a founder and academic project director of the OLH, welcomed UNC: “It is truly wonderful that UNC-Chapel Hill has joined the OLH LPS model. At this time of transition it is important that we understand that different models may be needed in different disciplines. Humanities researchers, in particular, often fear an author-pays model. With the help of institutions such as UNC, we will provide a viable alternative to reap the benefits of open access in the humanities disciplines.”

Carol Hunter, Deputy University Librarian and Associate University Librarian for Collections and Services, added: “We are delighted to support new models for open access publishing such as the Open Library of Humanities and to be an advocate for open scholarship initiatives nationally and internationally.”
